נוֹקַ֥שְׁתָּ בְאִמְרֵי־פִ֑יךָ נִ֝לְכַּ֗דְתָּ בְּאִמְרֵי־פִֽיךָ׃

The power of speech carries a hidden danger, easily transforming into a binding trap where a person enslaves himself without receiving anything in return. Like stepping onto a hidden snare and then being firmly locked inside, careless words can completely capture a person [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. This capture happens in a specific sequence: first comes the initial stumble into the trap, followed by the final, inescapable lock [מלבי"ם].

The essence of this trap is the act of taking on a heavy obligation, such as becoming a financial guarantor for someone else's debt. The guarantor gains no personal benefit from the arrangement, yet finds himself completely bound simply because of the words he spoke [רלב"ג]. From a legal standpoint, this is comparable to a person who agrees to guarantee a loan at the exact moment the money is handed over to the borrower. At that precise instant, the verbal commitment alone is entirely valid and binding, requiring no formal oath or official act of acquisition to enforce the debt [אלשיך].

The process of becoming trapped unfolds in two distinct stages. The initial fall into the snare occurs through the simple verbal agreement to back a friend's debt. The second, final stage of being caught happens when the agreement is sealed with a handshake [מלבי"ם]. This physical gesture of shaking hands, intended to confirm spoken agreements and business dealings with outsiders, is the very act that springs the trap closed [רש"י].

On a deeper level, this concept extends far beyond everyday financial matters. It hints at the profound spiritual commitment made by the Israelites at Mount Sinai, where they became divine guarantors based entirely on their spoken words [אלשיך]. Furthermore, it serves as a philosophical reflection on the internal human struggle. The human intellect often acts as a guarantor for the desiring soul, making itself responsible for obligations toward God, even though the intellect derives no actual pleasure from physical cravings. To break free from this spiritual entanglement, a person must humbly submit before God, actively distance himself from the pull of physical desires, and urgently redirect his focus toward the pursuit of wisdom and understanding [רלב"ג].
