דניאל, פרק ח׳, פסוק ט״ז

Daniel 8:16Sefaria

Out of the fog of a mysterious vision, a heavenly command suddenly rings out, seeking to clear away the confusion and explain the hidden sights. A wondrous voice emerges from an unseen source, directing an angel to reveal the meaning behind the secrets.

The exact identity of this human-like voice is a matter of discussion [מלבי״ם]. One approach suggests it is the voice of God Himself. The description of the voice as human stems from the natural tendency of prophets to describe the Creator using familiar, earthly forms. Another perspective identifies the speaker as the angel Michael. Because Michael holds a higher spiritual rank than Gabriel, he possesses the authority to issue commands to him. Regardless of the speaker's identity, he remains hidden from sight, leaving Daniel to hear only the voice echoing from a distance.

The origin point of this voice is also understood in different ways. The primary approach among commentators views the location physically, explaining that the voice emerged directly from the waters of the river [רש״י, מצודת דוד] or from the thick vegetation growing along its banks [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In contrast, another approach offers a psychological explanation. Rather than describing a physical location, the phrasing reflects Daniel's internal state of doubt and uncertainty regarding the meaning of what he had seen, making him in urgent need of an explanation [יוסף אבן יחיא].

This hidden voice addresses the angel Gabriel, who appears in the form of a man, and assigns him a clear task: to explain and interpret the vision for Daniel [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. When giving this command, the voice refers to Daniel using a term of distinction. This choice of words is intentional, serving to highlight Daniel's importance and greatness. It stands as a testament to his impressive character, dignity, and high spiritual standing [רש״י].
