וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיְדַבֵּ֛ר אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה אֶל־כׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

In the moments following the sealing of the covenant and the conclusion of his public addresses, the leader of the Israelites initiates a deeply personal and emotional farewell. Just before passing the baton of leadership, he approaches the nation with a profound blend of humility, gentle correction, and encouragement for the future.

The primary approach among commentators is that Moses embarked on a literal, physical walk through the nation. Once the covenant ceremony ended and the people had dispersed to their tents, he left the Levite camp and entered the camp of the Israelites [רמב״ן, אברבנאל, ביאור יש״ר, רבנו בחיי, מלבי״ם]. Moving from tribe to tribe and tent to tent, he sought to honor the people and bid them farewell just as a person parts from a close friend. His goal was to comfort them over his impending passing, ensuring they would not be afraid of the battles that lay ahead [אבן עזרא, צאינה וראינה, חזקוני, פני דוד, צרור המור].

Naturally, a question arises as to why Moses needed to exert himself by walking, rather than gathering the nation with trumpets as he had always done. On the day of his death, his formal authority was removed, and the trumpets were stored away, reflecting the principle that earthly power does not apply on the day of one's passing. It was time for Joshua to assume command, and one era of leadership cannot overlap with another even by a hairsbreadth [חזקוני, הדר זקנים, פני דוד]. By walking among the people, Moses demonstrated tremendous humility, willingly setting aside his royal honor [כלי יקר, שפתי כהן, צרור המור]. Furthermore, he desired to earn spiritual reward for the sheer physical effort of carrying out this final duty [צאינה וראינה, שפתי כהן].

Moses moved swiftly across the length and breadth of the camp to prove that his physical strength remained completely intact. He wanted to make it absolutely clear that his upcoming statement about no longer being able to lead was not due to bodily frailty, but solely because of God's decree forbidding him to continue [כלי יקר]. Alongside this physical reality, some interpret his movement in a spiritual or metaphorical sense. His walking represented his soul and life force beginning to depart, a natural process experienced by the righteous as they approach death [אור החיים]. Others view it as a symbol of awakening to action [ספורנו], or a process of inner strengthening and empowerment [שד״ל].

The content of his final message is understood in two distinct ways. Some explain that he delivered words of strength and encouragement regarding their imminent entry into the land under Joshua's leadership [רלב״ג, בכור שור, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Conversely, others view his message as one of moral instruction, rebuke, and a call for repentance and peace. Because a person who has strayed rarely rushes to a doctor of the soul, the wise healer must travel directly to the patient to awaken their heart [כלי יקר, מנחת עני, נחל קדומים, פני דוד].

Speaking to the entire nation individually marked a fundamental shift in how Moses communicated. In the past, his voice would miraculously carry throughout the entire camp at once. Now, with his death approaching, his prophetic level began to wane, requiring him to physically walk among the people so they could hear him [העמק דבר]. Yet, despite this being his final day, Moses retained his full physical and mental faculties to deliver all the necessary teachings before the Torah's conclusion [אור החיים]. On this day, which was exactly his one hundred and twentieth birthday, the wellsprings of deep wisdom were miraculously sealed from him. This was done so he would not feel sorrow over his passing, allowing him to step aside for Joshua's leadership with love and without a trace of jealousy [רבנו בחיי, כלי יקר, הדר זקנים].
