Earthly pursuits simply do not provide the lasting satisfaction or the eternal legacy that a person hopes to achieve.

This profound disappointment results in a shattered soul and a broken will. A person works tirelessly with the deep desire that their material achievements will endure forever. Consequently, there is no real profit or lasting gain to be found anywhere in this passing physical world [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. However, looking at the broader picture, a fundamental distinction must be made between different types of labor. While chasing worldly matters and external wisdom ends in foolishness and disappointment, dedicating oneself to the Torah and God's Commandments represents true wisdom. If it appears that spiritual pursuits also lack immediate profit, it is only because true reward cannot be found in this lower, physical existence. The compensation for studying Torah and fulfilling the Commandments is not distributed in this temporary world, but is instead preserved for the World to Come and the higher spiritual realms [צאינה וראינה, אלשיך].
