קהלת, פרק ב׳, פסוק י״ז

The fragility of human existence and the temporary nature of material achievements often lead to a profound sense of despair. When a person observes the physical world and the ultimate fate of human labor, a severe disappointment with earthly life can take root. Yet, this deep disgust is not directed at existence itself. The primary approach among commentators is that this frustration is aimed strictly at life in the physical world and its empty pursuits.

The root of this despair is understood in several ways. It may stem from a prophetic vision, where the wise man looked into the future and saw the wickedness that would arise in the generation of his son [רש״י]. Alternatively, this disgust arises from a philosophical observation of a broken social order, such as a reality where the wicked hold power over the righteous [תעלומות חכמה]. Furthermore, there is the painful realization that even when a person successfully builds and enjoys life, nothing lasts forever. Material actions hold no true meaning beyond the immediate present [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This distress intensifies when considering how the events and actions of the physical world rarely align with human will [מצודת דוד]. The material realm is governed by the rigid laws of nature and chance. This stands in sharp contrast to spiritual deeds, such as the study of Torah and the fulfillment of Commandments, which exist on a higher, spiritual plane entirely disconnected from earthly limitations [אלשיך, תעלומות חכמה].

Ultimately, material pursuits offer no lasting benefit. Instead, they lead to frustration and a broken spirit, as a person is never fully satisfied, and the final results of their labor never perfectly match their original plans [מצודת דוד]. While most people risk their inner well-being chasing these empty worldly goals, the wise individual feels the deep pain of knowing that all earthly labor must eventually be left behind, perhaps to be inherited by a fool. True comfort is found only in spiritual achievements, which alone accompany a person into the World to Come [אלשיך].
