קהלת, פרק ב׳, פסוק ה׳

Ecclesiastes 2:5Sefaria

עָשִׂ֣יתִי לִ֔י גַּנּ֖וֹת וּפַרְדֵּסִ֑ים וְנָטַ֥עְתִּי בָהֶ֖ם עֵ֥ץ כׇּל־פֶּֽרִי׃

King Solomon harnessed his vast wisdom and profound understanding of the natural world to cultivate magnificent, highly precise agricultural landscapes. His efforts went far beyond standard planting, relying instead on a thorough mastery of the earth, its minerals, and its plant life.

He created distinct types of cultivated spaces to house his botanical achievements. The gardens are understood by some as designated plots for growing vegetables and flowers [מצודת ציון], while others view them as diverse environments containing a wide variety of tree species [אבן עזרא]. In contrast, the orchards are defined as areas strictly dedicated to fruit-bearing trees [מצודת ציון]. A different perspective suggests that the defining feature of an orchard is its exclusivity, serving as a habitat for only a single species of tree, such as an orchard entirely made up of pomegranates [אבן עזרא].

Within these spaces, Solomon planted trees capable of yielding every possible type of fruit [מצודת דוד]. This agricultural enterprise was a profound display of his unique insight into the natural order of creation. He possessed the ability to perfectly match every tree and plant to its ideal location, guided by a deep understanding of different soil types, water sources, and mineral compositions [חומת אנך].

This extraordinary wisdom allowed him to identify the hidden veins of the earth, which serve as the subterranean feeding arteries of the soil. Because Zion is considered the foundational point from which the entire world was established, the underground veins of all other lands ultimately converge there. Solomon knew exactly how to trace these hidden networks. He could identify which underground vein led to the distant land of Cush and planted spices, such as pepper, directly over it. Similarly, he located the specific vein connected to regions where carobs naturally thrive and planted carobs there. Through this mastery of the earth's hidden pathways, he successfully grew an exotic and massive array of plants and fruits from all corners of the globe directly in Jerusalem [רש״י, צאינה וראינה].
