Ecclesiastes 2:9Sefaria

King Solomon reflects on his unprecedented achievements and massive success in the material world. He experienced tremendous growth in worldly matters, carrying out great and wondrous deeds [מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא]. This immense success was not merely the result of being a royal heir who inherited a throne; rather, it was built through his own independent actions [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Furthermore, this period of expansion was amplified by a profound sense of joy [תעלומות חכמה]. While reflecting on how he surpassed all those who came before him, the primary reference is actually to his father, King David. However, out of deep respect for his father, Solomon avoided stating explicitly that he had surpassed him, choosing instead to use broad, general language [תורה תמימה].

Alongside this abundant material activity, his intellectual and spiritual core remained completely intact. His wisdom survived and endured [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that despite his vast worldly pursuits and the endless distractions involved in managing such an enormously wealthy kingdom, his wisdom was never forgotten and never left him. Taking a different perspective, some explain that this wisdom did not just passively stay with him; it actively came to his aid. It was precisely this wisdom that enabled him to successfully manage his vast affairs and invest his resources so intelligently [רש"י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A deeper layer of interpretation reveals exactly how this enduring wisdom was acquired. The wisdom that remained with him into his old age was earned through intense toil and hard labor. Another perspective suggests that it refers to wisdom learned through silence and submission, even in moments when a teacher was angry with him. Because he approached his studies with such deep humility, he earned the reward of having his wisdom remain with him permanently [תורה תמימה].
