At the decisive climax of the splitting of the Red Sea, a powerful, dual scene of salvation and loss unfolds. While the Egyptians drown in the depths, the Israelites continue to march in safety. This simultaneous occurrence highlights a miracle within a miracle: in the exact same location, two entirely different winds operated at once. One wind dried the seabed for the Israelites, while another melted the frozen waters to drown the pursuing Egyptian army [אבן עזרא, חזקוני, הטור הארוך, ספורנו]. This stark contrast between the two nations underscores their opposing fates, making the people themselves the focal point of the unfolding drama [קאסוטו]. Furthermore, the concurrent existence of a dry path and towering walls of water uproots any attempt to dismiss the event as a natural phenomenon, such as shifting tides.

The miracle was orchestrated so that the drowning Egyptians would clearly see the Israelites walking securely, forcing them to recognize God's absolute power in their final moments [אור החיים]. The Israelites, however, did not see their enemies drowning at that time, as the massive walls of water completely obscured their view. Because they had complained earlier about being taken out of Egypt, they were deemed unworthy of witnessing the immediate downfall of their oppressors [קונטרס חיבה יתירה].

As the Israelites progressed, the physical reality of their journey subtly shifted. Initially, they stepped into a sea that had transformed into dry land. As they continued forward, the waters behind them returned to their natural state and covered the Egyptians, leaving the Israelites walking on a dry surface completely surrounded by the churning sea on all sides [העמק דבר, מלבי״ם, חתם סופר]. This passage was not a vast, wide-open expanse but rather a narrow trail, a detail that further magnified the intensity of the miracle [תורה תמימה]. The towering waters alongside them served a practical purpose as well, acting as a physical guide to direct their path forward [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

As the event unfolded, the function of these water walls shifted. At first, they served as a protective barrier against the pursuing army. Once the Egyptians drowned and the threat was eliminated, the waters simply stood frozen in place, no longer acting as a defensive shield [העמק דבר, שפתי כהן]. Beneath the surface, however, the presence of these walls carried an underlying element of divine wrath and heavenly prosecution. Because it was a time of strict justice against the Egyptians, that same prosecuting force sought to strike the Israelites, arguing that they too had worshipped idols in Egypt [העמק דבר, שפתי כהן]. The sea's raging anger only subsided when the future merits of the Israelites fulfilling the Commandments were brought to their defense [דעת זקנים, מנחת שי]. This divine frustration was directed primarily at the average individuals who hesitated on the shore until the seabed was completely dry. In contrast, the righteous who leaped into the raging waters with absolute devotion before they split merited perfect, protective walls devoid of any heavenly anger [חתם סופר, ברכת אשר].

The waters standing firmly to their right and left also hint at the specific spiritual merits that shielded the nation. The right side represents the merit of the Torah, while the left symbolizes the Commandment of phylacteries, traditionally bound on the left arm [שפתי כהן, דעת זקנים]. On a deeper level, the ability to walk securely between towering walls on the right and the left served as a profound preparation for receiving the Torah. It demonstrated the Israelites' readiness to serve God with total dedication, successfully harmonizing all the contrasting and opposing traits of their souls—those of the right and those of the left—toward a unified devotion to the Creator [חומש קה״ת].
