Ezekiel 41:6Sefaria

The architecture of the Temple features a brilliant blend of practical engineering and deep respect for the sacred space. Surrounding the Sanctuary and the Holy of Holies is a complex network of side chambers that provides both a protective outer layer and functional rooms. These side chambers were constructed side by side and stacked vertically in multiple stories The primary approach among commentators is that there were thirty-three of these rooms in total, arranged in eleven sets across three sides of the building However, other perspectives exist. Some suggest this number refers to the height of the structure in feet rather than a count of the rooms [רד"ק]. Another tradition notes that during the era of the Second Temple, there were actually thirty-eight chambers arranged in a slightly different layout [רש"י].

The structural design of this network was highly advanced, focusing on stability without compromising the main building. The ceiling beams of the side rooms extended inward, resting on a dedicated partition wall that separated the main Temple from the chambers [מלבי"ם]. The goal of this layout was to bind the entire complex together into a single, highly stable unit [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Crucially, the builders entirely avoided making holes in the main Sanctuary wall to insert these support beams, knowing that doing so would weaken the structure and risk a collapse [מצודת דוד].

To solve this engineering challenge, the outer face of the main Temple wall was built with a stepped design. It was thickest at the base and gradually narrowed as it rose, creating natural ledges along the exterior. The beams of the side chambers simply rested on these stone ledges, utilizing the exact same construction method employed in Solomon's Temple Through this method, the surrounding network of rooms heavily reinforced the main building while remaining structurally independent, ensuring that the sacred inner walls of the Temple remained completely untouched and intact [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
