A powerful ruler often believes his conquests are the result of his own military strength. However, a divine message directed at Sennacherib, the King of Assyria, completely shatters his illusion of power and invincibility. His military victories over various nations did not stem from his own might. Instead, they were part of God's ancient plan, in which Sennacherib served merely as an actor and a tool.

The commentators agree that these rapid victories were achieved only because God weakened and exhausted the inhabitants of the targeted cities. Stripped of their power, these people were left entirely incapable of resisting or fighting back. They were broken and filled with shame [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, it was their divinely ordained weakness, rather than the bravery or strength of the Assyrian king, that decided the outcome of the battles.

To vividly illustrate the extreme fragility and lack of strength of these conquered nations, a series of images from the plant kingdom is used, representing weakness and rapid destruction. First, the defeated people are compared to simple field grass and green vegetation, which are inherently weak plants meant for basic consumption [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Next, they are likened to grass growing on rooftops. Because ancient roofs were flat and constructed from clay, any grass that sprouted there was sparse, incredibly fragile, and quick to wither and dry out [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Finally, they are compared to blighted grain. This depicts crops struck by disease, resulting in defective stalks that dry up and are ruined before they can harden, ripen, and grow into a full harvest [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
