In a moment of existential crisis, a desperate plea for divine intervention arises as an enemy threatens to destroy the last surviving members of the nation. The request is not born of doubt, but rather a deep hope—an earnest wish that God will take notice and hear the enemy's insults [מצודות]. The enemy messenger, Rabshakeh, arrived with the clear goal of mocking God, arrogantly claiming that He is powerless to save Jerusalem. This blasphemy against God is also understood as a direct insult and degradation of the Israelites themselves [רד״ק].

There are different views on how these arrogant words are addressed. One approach suggests that God Himself will respond to the blasphemy. According to this view, He will answer the insults directly [מצודות, שטיינזלץ], prove His power and Israel's righteousness through a clear miracle [שטיינזלץ], or actively punish Rabshakeh for his arrogance [רד״ק]. Alternatively, another perspective suggests that it was Rabshakeh who was trying to prove his own claims. By pointing to his continuous military successes, the enemy messenger attempted to validate his blasphemous words [רש״י, רד״ק].

Faced with such a severe threat, an urgent call is made to lift up a prayer to God [מצודת דוד] on behalf of the surviving remnant. This small group consists of the Israelites remaining inside Jerusalem, who are left entirely alone after all the other fortified cities in Judah have already fallen to the king of Assyria [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ].
