שמואל ב, פרק י״ד, פסוק כ״ה

II Samuel 14:25Sefaria

A sudden shift in the narrative focuses entirely on exceptional physical beauty, interrupting the ongoing events to reveal the deep psychological motives and complex family dynamics at play. Absalom possessed a striking appearance that earned him immense praise [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His physical perfection was not limited to a single feature but extended across his entire body. From the bottom of his feet to the top of his head, he was completely without flaw [אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A primary approach among commentators views the focus on his appearance at this specific moment as a psychological and political background to his eventual rebellion against his father. Absalom's rare beauty and physical perfection filled him with intense pride and a sense of superiority. He believed his flawless appearance made him the most worthy candidate to inherit the throne. Driven by this arrogance, his position as the eldest son following Amnon's death, and the suspicion that David planned to crown Solomon instead, Absalom was motivated to rebel during his father's lifetime and win over the hearts of the people [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. This intense focus on his own beauty, particularly his hair, revealed a deep childish vanity. Rather than finding pride in his own family and children as a mature adult, he remained obsessed with his physical looks [אלשיך].

Conversely, another perspective views this focus on Absalom's appearance not as a setup for his rebellion, but as a way to highlight the depth of King David's pain over Amnon's murder. Naturally, such striking beauty inspires admiration, and one might even praise God for creating such a flawless person, especially a beloved son. Yet, despite Absalom's captivating appearance, David firmly refused to look at him when he returned to Jerusalem [אברבנאל, אלשיך]. This harsh distance stemmed from David's desire for spiritual integrity rather than mere physical beauty. While Absalom lacked any physical defect, David simply could not tolerate the presence of a son who was consumed by arrogance and had murdered his own brother [חומת אנך].
