I Kings 3:22Sefaria

In the royal courtroom, a sharp and direct confrontation unfolds between two mothers, each fiercely claiming the living child as her own. The second woman, acting as the defendant, immediately denies the other mother's claims. Unlike the plaintiff, who previously shared lengthy stories, the defendant keeps her argument brief. She focuses strictly on the core of the dispute, afraid that speaking too much might cause her to trip over her own words

A careful look at how the women structure their arguments reveals a deep psychological layer. Naturally, a person speaks first about what is most important to them. The defendant argues by stating that her son is the living one and the other woman's son is the dead one, showing that her primary focus and true desire is the living child. On the other hand, the plaintiff argues by first pointing out that her companion's son is the dead one, and only then claiming the living baby as her own. This reveals that her main interest is not actually the living child, but rather the tragic fact that the other woman's child has died [מלבי״ם].

The women continue to argue, repeating their claims multiple times before the king, just as people in a lawsuit often do to strengthen their position and persuade the judge Listening to these repeated arguments, King Solomon notices a crucial pattern. He recognizes that the plaintiff consistently mentions the dead child first, exposing her true motive. She simply wants the other woman to be left without a child as well. This brilliant psychological insight is exactly what guides the king to later suggest the test of the sword, ultimately exposing the truth [מלבי״ם].
