Isaiah 22:10Sefaria

The impending siege of Jerusalem brought a wave of desperate physical preparations. Driven by intense fear and heavy pressure, the city's residents resorted to extreme measures, tragically ignoring the deeper spiritual need to turn back to God [שד״ל]. In their frantic effort to secure building materials for the defense lines, the people were forced to sacrifice their own property.

To manage this crisis, the authorities initiated a counting of the city's houses. The primary approach among commentators is that this was a careful inventory to identify surplus homes that were not strictly essential for survival By creating a precise registry of property ownership, officials could determine how many houses each person owned. This allowed them to systematically demolish structures to harvest stones and wood, taking proportionally from citizens based on their wealth Alternatively, some suggest this counting served an entirely different purpose: a population census designed to calculate the number of available soldiers within the city

Following the counting, the physical destruction began. The primary approach among commentators is that these homes were torn down so their stones could be used to fill cracks and repair breaches in the city wall However, another perspective argues that the demolished houses were specifically those located just outside the city. Destroying them was a tactical move to prevent the approaching enemy from using the structures as cover during the siege

This tragic destruction highlights a deep absurdity in the city's response. Normally, a city wall is built to protect the homes and the people inside. Yet, the panic was so overwhelming that the homes themselves were sacrificed to save the wall [שד״ל]. Ultimately, the goal of this destruction was to fortify the city's defenses [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת ציון], with some suggesting that the harvested materials were specifically used to increase the overall height of the wall [אברבנאל].
