ישעיהו, פרק מ״ד, פסוק י׳

Isaiah 44:10Sefaria

מִֽי־יָצַ֥ר אֵ֖ל וּפֶ֣סֶל נָסָ֑ךְ לְבִלְתִּ֖י הוֹעִֽיל׃

The absolute absurdity of idolatry exposes the profound depths of human foolishness. In ordinary circumstances, a person might agree to perform a degrading or shameful act if promised a significant reward. Yet in the pursuit of false gods, an individual invests immense effort, spends money, and goes to extreme lengths for absolute emptiness, receiving absolutely no benefit in return [מלבי״ם, רד״ק]. The primary approach among commentators highlights the sheer mockery of investing so much into a man-made object that is completely powerless to save its creator.

The nature of this worship can be understood from different angles. One perspective identifies two distinct groups of idolaters. The first group mistakenly believes that the physical object itself is a divine being. The second group understands that the idol is merely physical material, but they view it as a conduit designed to draw down spiritual power and abundance from the celestial bodies [מלבי״ם]. Conversely, another approach views these descriptions as the actual manufacturing process of the idol. A person first sculpts the figure out of wood or stone, and then covers or plates it [שד״ל].

Regarding the physical creation of the idol, the primary approach among commentators is that it involves the melting and casting of metal to form a molten image [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Others suggest the process refers specifically to the final covering and plating of the sculpted figure [רד״ק, שד״ל]. Ultimately, the physical effort underscores the irony of the entire endeavor: the human creator actively restricts the raw material, forcing it into a specific, limited shape and form [מלבי״ם, מנחת שי], only to turn around and submit to it in worship.
