הֵ֤ן כׇּל־חֲבֵרָיו֙ יֵבֹ֔שׁוּ וְחָרָשִׁ֥ים הֵ֖מָּה מֵאָדָ֑ם יִֽתְקַבְּצ֤וּ כֻלָּם֙ יַעֲמֹ֔דוּ יִפְחֲד֖וּ יֵבֹ֥שׁוּ יָֽחַד׃

Creating idols and relying on them reveals a deep sense of human failure. Attempting to manufacture or control higher powers is a doomed effort that ultimately brings disappointment, anxiety, and profound shame to everyone involved. The individuals who surround these statues play various roles in this futile process. The primary approach among commentators is that these companions are the people who join the artisan to worship the idol [רש"י, מצודת דוד], or perhaps the craftsmen and priests who participate in its creation [אבן עזרא, שטיינזלץ]. A more conceptual view suggests an intimate bond between the creator and the creation: just as the statue is entirely empty and meaningless, the people who devote themselves to it become equally empty [רד"ק]. Others explain that these individuals gather with the specific belief that their shared focus and rituals will successfully draw down mystical forces from the stars and higher realms [מלבי"ם].

Yet, the artisans who carve these figures are merely human [מצודת ציון]. This fact presents a sharp, undeniable logic. Because the creators are ordinary flesh and blood rather than angels or heavenly beings, it is impossible for their handiwork to be divine. A human being simply cannot build a god or control the heavens [רש"י, רד"ק, מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם]. Even if these craftsmen possess exceptional wisdom and talent far beyond ordinary people, their efforts will inevitably end in disgrace [שד"ל].

When all these worshippers and artisans gather and stand together, the final result is overwhelming fear and shame. If they were to pause and rationally examine their actions, they would recognize the sheer foolishness of their creations, leading to a profound fear of God and deep embarrassment [רד"ק, מצודת דוד]. Whether they assemble to argue with the prophet or to stir up mystical dread before their idol, they will eventually face the humiliating truth that their efforts are entirely useless [שד"ל, מלבי"ם].

A unique perspective views this mass gathering through the lens of dark magic. Unlike the blessings given by God, which are infinite and never come at another person's expense, sorcery cannot create something out of nothing. It can only siphon power or fortune from one source to give to another. Therefore, when an entire group stands together in one place, their magic becomes completely powerless. It is impossible to bring fortune to one person without stealing it from the companion standing right beside them. As a result, the gathered crowd is left frozen in fear and shame, fully exposing the complete helplessness of their false beliefs [אהבת יהונתן].
