A public reading of Jeremiah's prophecies occurs in a highly visible and central location within the Temple, intended to reach a massive audience. Baruch shares these messages, which are not ordinary statements but prophecies spoken through the Holy Spirit [מצודת דוד].
The address is delivered from the upper court, known as the Courtyard of the Priests. This area was situated higher up the mountain than the adjacent courtyard where the rest of the Israelites stood [מצודת דוד]. Crowds gathered in masses within this elevated space to listen to the words being read [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
Baruch reads from the chamber of Gemariah, a room positioned directly at the entrance and built into the very space of the Temple gate [מצודת דוד]. There are different views regarding the identity of this specific gate. One tradition identifies it as the Eastern Gate of the Temple [רש״י, רד״ק]. Another perspective understands the description literally, suggesting that the gate had previously collapsed and was newly rebuilt during that period [מצודת דוד].
