A monarch's ultimate failure is often revealed not in battle, but in his inability to control his own court. King Zedekiah completely surrenders to the demands of his officials regarding the fate of the prophet Jeremiah, exposing a profound political weakness. He grants his ministers total control to treat the prophet as they see fit, entirely reversing his previous decision to set Jeremiah free [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Zedekiah openly confesses his utter lack of power. The primary approach among commentators is that the king actually disagrees with his officials and has no desire to see the prophet harmed. However, he simply lacks the authority and strength to stand up to them [רש״י, מצודת ציון]. This confession points to a severe political reality. The nature of his surrender suggests that his position as ruler is completely conditional. If Zedekiah were to force his own will and protect the prophet against the wishes of his court, he would effectively cease to be king, as his officials would immediately launch a rebellion against him [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].

However, a different perspective suggests that the king's response is more than just an admission of weakness; it contains a hidden plea. According to this view, Zedekiah subtly hints to his officials that they should judge Jeremiah favorably. He wants them to realize that Jeremiah is a true prophet who only warns of disaster so that the people will repent and save both themselves and the city. The king deliberately chooses to convey this message indirectly, fully aware that if he were to speak openly in defense of the prophet, the officials would instantly reject his words [חומת אנך].
