ירמיהו, פרק ל״ח, פסוק ו׳

The king's officials execute their plan to harm Jeremiah, moving him from his imprisonment in the courtyard of the guard into a harsh, life-threatening environment. They take him to a pit belonging to Malkiyahu [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. While it might seem as though they violently threw him inside, the process was actually much more controlled. Because the pit was incredibly deep, they did not toss him in all at once. Instead, they used ropes to slowly lower him down to the bottom [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The pit had once been filled with water, but it had since dried up and contained nothing but mud. As Jeremiah reached the bottom, part of his body began to sink into the soft, wet clay [מצודת דוד]. He continued to sink deeper into the mud, leaving him trapped and in immediate mortal danger [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
