Job 19:20Sefaria

בְּעוֹרִ֣י וּ֭בִבְשָׂרִי דָּבְקָ֣ה עַצְמִ֑י וָ֝אֶתְמַלְּטָ֗ה בְּע֣וֹר שִׁנָּֽי׃

Job's physical suffering reaches an agonizing peak, painting a grim picture of a man consumed by illness. He is reduced to a mere skeleton, barely covered by skin, holding onto the smallest fraction of health. The primary approach among commentators is that Job is experiencing extreme weight loss and the total depletion of his body's moisture. With his flesh wasting away, his protruding bones cling directly to his skin and whatever meager tissue remains [מצודת דוד, רמב״ן, ביאור שטיינזלץ, תקות אנוש]. Taking this anatomical reality further, the bones are seen as pressing against the outer skin on one side and the internal organs on the other, as the cushioning layer of muscle has entirely vanished [מלבי״ם].

In detailing his narrow margin of survival, a variety of interpretations arise regarding what exactly remained intact. The most widely accepted view identifies the surviving area as his gums. While Job's entire body was ravaged by boils and decay, the only untouched, healthy flesh left was the tissue surrounding the roots of his teeth [רש״י, רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, חומת אנך, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another physical perspective suggests his face was so disfigured that his teeth were completely exposed, allowing him to take in only tiny amounts of food through those exposed roots [רמב״ן].

Diverging from the focus on his gums, other views suggest entirely different struggles. One interpretation frames his reaction as a desperate attempt to distract himself from the overwhelming agony by biting into his own flesh [תקות אנוש]. Conversely, another approach argues that just as teeth naturally lack skin, Job lacked any escape from his illness, meaning he found no relief whatsoever [אבן עזרא]. A more unique biological reading points to a total collapse of his digestive system. In this view, his internal organs adhered to his bones and ceased to function. Consequently, despite having teeth to chew, his body rejected his meals, forcing him to regurgitate his food like an animal [מלבי״ם].

Finally, a conceptual approach views this surviving remnant as a metaphor for the lips, which serve as a protective barrier for the mouth. Responding to the friends who accuse him, Job explains that while his body is ruined, he is kept alive specifically by the merit of his speech. Before his lips could waste away, he quickly used them to justify God's judgment and speak words of faith. Because he guarded his speech and did not sin with his lips, his life was spared [אלשיך].
