ויקרא, פרק ז׳, פסוק כ״ב

פרשת צו

Leviticus 7:22Sefaria

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

A profound shift occurs in the flow of the sacrificial laws, redirecting the focus from the ministers of the sanctuary to the everyday individual. While the earlier instructions were meant specifically for the priests tasked with carrying them out, the divine communication now turns directly to the entire nation [רש ר הירש]. God initiates a new message to issue a renewed warning against the consumption of specific animal fats and blood. Although this prohibition was introduced earlier, it receives a fresh beginning here to introduce new details that were previously unmentioned. These additions include the severe punishment for eating these forbidden parts, as well as the specific rules regarding their ritual purity and impurity.

The placement of this new instruction is highly deliberate. It is embedded directly within the laws of the peace offering because it serves as a necessary completion to them. By placing it here, God clarifies for the everyday person bringing the sacrifice exactly which parts of their animal are strictly forbidden for consumption [אברבנאל, רש ר הירש].

Because this instruction is so intimately connected to the laws that come right before it, a fascinating discussion emerged regarding how the text should be physically written within a Torah scroll. One approach, backed by early legal authorities and precise manuscripts, argues that the text should flow continuously without the spacing of a new, open paragraph. This formatting choice highlights the unbroken conceptual link to the preceding rules of the peace offering [אברבנאל, מנחת שי]. On the other hand, different traditions and many existing Torah scrolls maintain that a physical gap should be left to create an open paragraph, honoring the fact that this is a distinctly new and independent communication from God [מנחת שי].
