דניאל, פרק ט׳, פסוק י׳

Daniel 9:10Sefaria

A genuine confession carries a heavy weight when it acknowledges that straying from the right path was not a result of ignorance, but a deliberate choice to ignore constant guidance. The primary approach among commentators is that the role of the prophets involved much more than just the historical delivery of the Torah. Rather, they provided an ongoing system of warnings, rebukes, and instructions across generations. Their purpose was to alert the people and inspire them to return to the path of goodness, yet the people actively chose to tune out their voices.

Beyond ignoring the prophets, the confession highlights a deeper, double fracture in the relationship with the Creator. This fracture is understood through two distinct aspects of God's identity, which represent two different paths of connection and repentance. The first path is built on the fear and awe of God's immense greatness. When a person repents out of this reverence, He grants them mercy, and their intentional sins are forgiven as if they were mere accidents. The second path is built on love and the unique closeness between God and His people. When repentance is driven by this deep love, the forgiveness is so powerful that intentional sins are completely transformed into actual merits.

The painful admission of failing to listen to God is a recognition that the people fell short on both of these fronts. They failed to return to Him out of a sense of awe for His greatness, and they equally failed to return out of love for their special bond with Him [אלשיך].
