יחזקאל, פרק ל״ט, פסוק ט״ז

Ezekiel 39:16Sefaria

וְגַ֥ם שֶׁם־עִ֛יר הֲמוֹנָ֖הֿ וְטִהֲר֥וּ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ {פ}

The aftermath of a colossal battle leaves a landscape forever changed, marked by the sheer scale of the defeated armies. The final burial of these massive forces serves a dual purpose: establishing a permanent monument to divine intervention and completing the necessary restoration of the land to a state of absolute purity.

The primary approach among commentators is that a city near the burial valley will be given a name reflecting the loud, bustling multitudes of the fallen army. This new identity stands as an eternal memorial to the great miracle God performed and the staggering number of casualties buried nearby. [מלבי״ם] adds that this specific city is where the enemy forces originally pitched their tents. Renaming it serves a practical warning, intentionally keeping travelers away from a place steeped in impurity. Offering a different perspective, [רד״ק] suggests that the nearby city in question might actually be Jerusalem itself. He also introduces an interpretation that views this event as a broader hint at the ultimate downfall of a great, noisy Roman metropolis.

The culmination of this massive undertaking is the complete purification of the land. Once every bone is safely interred, the cleansing process is officially finished [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. By concentrating all the casualties and their associated impurity into one clearly identified location, namely the valley and its adjacent city, the rest of the country is guaranteed to remain perfectly clean [מצודת דוד]. [רש״י] highlights the practical necessity of this thorough cleanup, explaining that it ensures the Israelites can safely observe the laws of purity and separate their holy agricultural offerings without any fear of hidden contamination.
