The total physical destruction of Jerusalem becomes a grim reality as its defensive walls are systematically dismantled from every side. The Babylonian forces, also identified as the Chaldeans [ביאור שטיינזלץ], do not merely breach the city perimeter. Instead, they actively smash and shatter the stone walls into pieces [מצודת ציון].
The military forces carrying out this widespread devastation are the troops who arrived alongside the captain of the guard [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A parallel historical account in the Book of Jeremiah makes it explicitly clear that the army acted directly with him [רד״ק]. This same detail is also preserved in at least one ancient manuscript and an early Venice print of the present account [מנחת שי], confirming that the captain of the guard personally oversaw his army as they leveled the defenses of the city.
