וַיִּשְׂרֹ֥ף אֶת־בֵּית־יְהֹוָ֖ה וְאֶת־בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְאֵ֨ת כׇּל־בָּתֵּ֧י יְרוּשָׁלַ֛͏ִם וְאֶת־כׇּל־בֵּ֥ית גָּד֖וֹל שָׂרַ֥ף בָּאֵֽשׁ׃

The absolute destruction of Jerusalem is marked by the burning of its spiritual, governmental, and social centers of power. The fall of God's house and the royal palace together is not a coincidence. These institutions were built during the same era and ultimately fell at the exact same time. This shared fate highlights that the success and very survival of the monarchy depended entirely on the existence of the Temple [אברבנאל].

Beyond the Temple and the palace, the destruction swept through the rest of the city, targeting its largest and most significant structures. The primary approach among commentators is that these massive buildings belonged to the city's elite, such as government ministers, the wealthy, and other notable figures. In fact, this specific focus serves to clarify the overall extent of the devastation. Rather than every single home in the city burning to the ground without exception, the fire was intentionally and exclusively directed at the homes of these important individuals [מצודת דוד].

Alongside this physical and social understanding, there is also a spiritual dimension to the targets of the fire. The prominent structures destroyed also included the synagogues and study halls. These places earned a status of greatness because they served to magnify and elevate the study of Torah and the practice of prayer [רש״י].
