I Samuel 15:4Sefaria

Preparing for a divinely mandated war requires both military strategy and deep spiritual care. When King Saul sets out to battle the nation of Amalek, he first calls the people together through a public proclamation. The nation responds with eager enthusiasm, gathering willingly to avenge God without any need for coercion [אהבת יהונתן]. However, this public announcement also plants the seeds that will later expose Saul's tragic failure. Because the prophet's orders are declared openly, the people surely would have listened to Saul had he firmly commanded them later on. Consequently, his future excuse that he spared the enemy's spoils out of fear of the people is entirely unjustified [מלבי״ם].

Following the gathering, Saul conducts a military census, a standard practice for kings before battle The method of this counting carries significant meaning, though opinions differ on its exact nature. Some suggest the counting simply takes place at a specific location known by a name related to lambs The primary approach among commentators is that actual lambs are used. Because it is strictly forbidden to count the Israelites directly lest a plague strike them, even when preparing for a commanded war, Saul instructs each soldier to take a single lamb. The animals are then counted to determine the army's size. Saul provides these animals from his own private herds This detail highlights the king's immense personal wealth, proving that his later failure to destroy Amalek's spoils does not stem from greed, as he already possesses vast riches [מלבי״ם].

A third perspective links this unique counting method to the holiday of Passover. In this view, the army gathers in the city of Nov and is counted by the Passover sacrifices they bring The timing of this war during the spring month of Nissan is highly deliberate. The zodiac sign for Nissan is the ram or lamb. Amalek, considered a leading nation that relies heavily on astrology, draws its perceived strength from this very sign. By orchestrating their downfall during this specific month, God demonstrates His supreme providence, defeating the enemy at the exact moment they believe themselves to be most powerful [אהבת יהונתן].

The resulting army is massive, consisting of two hundred thousand foot soldiers who march into battle without horses Yet, a distinct group of ten thousand men from the tribe of Judah is counted separately and granted its own independent command. This separation is a strategic response to the enemy's composition, as Ishmaelites are fighting alongside the Amalekite forces. The tribe of Judah holds a unique military and spiritual tradition of archery, making them the perfect counterforce required to subdue the power of Ishmael [אהבת יהונתן].
