A harsh prophecy decrees a severe, twofold punishment from God upon King Jehoiakim of Judah, targeting both his royal legacy and his physical remains. First, his royal dynasty is to be severed, ensuring he leaves behind no descendant who will enjoy a stable and lasting rule. Although his son Jeconiah would eventually take the throne, his reign lasted a mere three months and ten days. Because this period was so exceptionally brief, it is not considered a true continuation of the royal seat [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

The second part of the punishment is directed at the king's body after his death. He is condemned to a disgraceful end, entirely denied the dignity of a proper burial. The circumstances of this humiliation complement one another: he will die on the road while being led away into exile [מצודת דוד], and his captors, the Chaldeans, will actively prevent anyone from burying him [רד״ק]. Consequently, his corpse will be left completely abandoned to disgrace and exposed to the harsh extremes of the weather, suffering the burning heat of the sun throughout the day and enduring freezing, ice-forming cold during the night [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד].
