The ultimate punishment for a society that rejects divine guidance is its own moral and social collapse. Because the people refused to accept the commandments given to them, God places obstacles in their path, allowing their internal alienation to become the very source of their ruin [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד].

The nature of this downfall is deeply rooted in the breakdown of the closest human relationships. Some explain this as an active betrayal, where individuals directly cause one another to fail. In this scenario, a father intentionally trips up his son, and a neighbor actively brings down his friend [מלבי״ם].

Alternatively, this collapse is driven by profound apathy and baseless hatred. When disaster strikes, the natural instinct to protect loved ones completely disappears. A father will not warn his son of impending danger, nor will a son alert his father. This cruel indifference extends beyond the family to neighbors sharing a home or living nearby, as well as to close friends and business partners. Instead of looking out for one another, each person secretly desires the ruin of his fellow [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד].

The tragic consequence of such deep social fracture is mutual destruction. Because no one offers a warning or extends a helping hand, everyone inevitably falls over the exact same obstacle that reaches their shared community, perishing together in the end [מצודת דוד, רד״ק].
