An unimaginable gap exists between the limits of human understanding and the infinite greatness of God. God is immensely powerful and wondrous in His very existence [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג]. Because humans are bound by physical matter while God is entirely without a body or form, people are fundamentally unable to grasp His true essence [אלשיך]. However, even though His core nature remains hidden, humanity can still recognize His greatness by observing His actions in the world [מלבי״ם].

Beyond His boundless power, God is eternal, having neither a beginning nor an end. The primary approach among commentators is that God exists completely outside the dimension of time, a reality that humans simply lack the capacity to understand. Descriptions of God's existence that rely on the concept of years merely borrow human language to make an abstract idea easier to grasp [אבן עזרא]. A slightly different perspective suggests that the idea of endless years does not refer to God's age, but rather to the countless years during which He has performed great and awesome deeds that are impossible for humans to fully investigate [רמב״ן].

Recognizing that God's eternal nature is far beyond human comprehension leads to a practical lesson. Facing such infinite greatness, a person should look back to the distant past, ask about the events of early generations, and learn from their experiences [רש״י].
