Judges 3:10Sefaria

The emergence of Israel's first judge stems not from an official appointment or noble family lineage, but from a profound divine inspiration meant to rescue the nation from distress. His leadership grows from an inner awakening, blending civil guidance with military bravery. The primary approach among commentators is that this divine abundance grants a person the wisdom to judge the people fairly, while also providing the courage and physical strength needed to go to war, completely removing any fear or cowardice Alternatively, another perspective identifies this divine spirit specifically as the gift of prophecy [רד״ק].

Beyond his mental and military preparation, Othniel's leadership carries a deep spiritual dimension. He acted as a passionate defender of the Israelites, arguing that God has an obligation to save His people regardless of whether they are innocent or guilty. This defense was based on the original promise God made to Moses in Egypt, where God declared that He would redeem the Israelites even while foreseeing their future sin with the Golden Calf [רש״י]. This urge to defend the nation was not merely Othniel's personal initiative. Rather, God Himself placed this desire in his heart, prompting him to teach this defense to his students. The ultimate purpose of this divine inspiration was to awaken heavenly mercy, silence any spiritual accusers, and secure the nation's salvation [חומת אנך].

As a direct result of this unique combination of physical bravery and spiritual advocacy, God delivered the King of Aram into his power. Empowered by immense strength [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ], Othniel maintained a constant upper hand, successfully defeating and subduing his enemy time and time again [מצודת דוד].
