תְּשַׁלַּ֣ח ר֭וּחֲךָ יִבָּרֵא֑וּן וּ֝תְחַדֵּ֗שׁ פְּנֵ֣י אֲדָמָֽה׃

The endless cycle of life and the divine power that animates creation capture the profound transition from death to life. This transition is understood both as an ongoing natural process and a future miraculous event.

One perspective views this as the ordinary cycle of nature. When living creatures reach the end of their lives, God sends His spirit to bring forth new life to take their place. Through this continuous process, the species of the animal kingdom are sustained forever, even as individual creatures pass away and are replaced by new ones [רד״ק, אבן עזרא]. This is not a one-time event, but a constant, daily renewal of the original acts of creation [מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In this light, the earth is renewed through the arrival of new generations that continue to populate the world [רד״ק].

In contrast to this natural explanation, the primary approach among commentators understands these concepts as a profound promise for the future resurrection of the dead. While the earlier focus was on the animal kingdom, the attention now shifts to humanity, the pinnacle of creation [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. God sending His spirit points toward a future era when He will once again breathe life into lifeless bodies [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. In a miraculous event that transcends the laws of nature, souls will return to the original physical matter from which they were formed [רד״ק].

Within this future vision, death is not a final end but a temporary state akin to sleep. Its purpose is to cleanse the physical body from the spiritual impurity brought about by the original sin of the first man. Only after undergoing this purification in the dust of the earth will human beings be formed anew and rise again [אלשיך]. Consequently, the earth's renewal involves much more than the restoration of life to physical bodies. It represents a complete purification of the earth itself, washing away the flaws and darkness that clung to the world following the first human sin [אלשיך].
