Psalms 109:31Sefaria

כִּֽי־יַ֭עֲמֹד לִימִ֣ין אֶבְי֑וֹן לְ֝הוֹשִׁ֗יעַ מִשֹּׁפְטֵ֥י נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ {פ}

God's providence reveals itself most powerfully in moments of total helplessness, just when a person stands entirely defenseless against overwhelming forces. The primary approach among commentators views this dynamic as a matter of physical and legal rescue. God positions Himself beside a weak and destitute individual who lacks the power to save himself but places his complete trust in God [רד״ק]. This divine intervention is meant to rescue the vulnerable person from wicked enemies who act as judges over his life, condemning him and seeking his death [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In some interpretations, this struggle takes place within a deeply corrupt legal system. Here, judges attempt to execute the innocent under the false appearance of a proper legal procedure. In response, God steps in to clear the victim's name and protect him from this severe injustice [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, these judges do not necessarily sit in a formal courtroom. They can be everyday people who constantly attack and judge the vulnerable person with their words, aiming to bring about his complete ruin [מאירי].

Beyond the physical realm, this conflict also plays out within the human mind and spirit. On an internal level, it represents the daily struggle of the average person. The judges fighting for control over his soul are his own internal desires, namely the good and evil inclinations battling within. In this internal war, God stands beside the person to help Him overcome the pull of temptation [תורה תמימה].

On a broader cosmic level, the destitute individual symbolizes a person suffering through the pain of exile. Under this view, the judges are actually destructive angels and negative forces that the person created through his own past sins, which are waiting to punish him in the afterlife. God specifically stands at the person's right side because these destructive forces naturally try to attach themselves to the right, which represents holiness. Through the hardships of exile, which cleanse the person's wrongdoings and serve as a substitute for harsher future punishments, God destroys these negative forces and rescues the soul from their judgment [אלשיך].
