דניאל, פרק ח׳, פסוק י׳

Daniel 8:10Sefaria

A destructive power rises to enormous proportions, reaching a point where it seems to challenge the very heavens. On a literal level, this envisions a force growing so massive that it physically pulls down the celestial bodies [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective views this as a cosmic battle against heavenly beings, specifically targeting Michael, the heavenly commander [אבן עזרא].

However, the primary approach among commentators is to read this imagery as a profound metaphor for the people of Israel. Israel is compared to stars, serving as God's heavenly inheritance. The immense growth of this destructive power represents its rising strength as it prepares to wage war against them.

The celestial imagery used to describe the nation can be understood in different ways. Some view the references to the heavenly host and the stars as synonymous terms meant to emphasize the point [מצודת דוד]. Others, however, see these terms as representing distinct groups within the nation. The host symbolizes the general masses, while the stars represent the spiritual leadership, including the priests, national leaders, elders, and those who guide the public toward righteousness [מלבי״ם, יוסף אבן יחיא].

The devastating impact of this attack is pictured as casting these heavenly bodies down to the earth, an act of total dominance and subjugation. Physically, this points to the tragic loss of life, representing the multitudes killed by Antiochus [יוסף אבן יחיא]. Spiritually, it reflects an unprecedented attempt. Unlike previous empires, this power tried to force the people to abandon their faith entirely. By pulling them down from their holy, heavenly status to the mundane earth, the goal was to reduce them to the level of ordinary, idol-worshiping nations [מלבי״ם].

Finally, the brutal trampling of these fallen bodies represents the severe oppression that followed. This took the form of harsh enslavement and forced labor imposed on the survivors [יוסף אבן יחיא], as well as the ruthless crushing and execution of God's most devoted followers [מלבי״ם].
