Esther 9:4Sefaria

The rise of a Jewish leader within the heart of a foreign empire is not merely a political fact, but a driving force that transforms how the surrounding world treats his people. The fear and awe of Mordecai's growing power ultimately led the officials of Persia and Media to assist the Jews in their struggle. The primary approach among commentators divides this success into three distinct dimensions. First is his high rank and internal authority in managing the royal palace Second, his good reputation as viceroy spread across the entire empire, even reaching beyond the borders of Ahasuerus's rule Third, his power was marked by a continuous, unbroken process of growth He did not simply hold his position; he constantly subdued enemies and expanded his influence [מלבי״ם].

This relentless expansion created a profound psychological effect on the king's ministers. They drew a simple, terrifying conclusion: if Haman, who was the king's favorite and stood at the absolute peak of power, was completely destroyed by Mordecai, how could they possibly stand against him? Knowing that Mordecai was not resting on his past success but was continuously growing stronger, the officials feared he would strike them down if they stood in his way. As a result, they were incredibly careful never to oppose his will [יוסף אבן יחיא].

Mordecai's unique position stood in stark contrast to the normal laws of nature and politics. The way of the world is that when a person reaches the absolute height of power, they cannot maintain it forever and inevitably begin to fall, exactly as Haman did. Yet, the royal ministers saw that Mordecai reached the summit and did not slip back even a fraction. This proved to them that he was not subject to standard political gravity, but rather that God was with Him [מנות הלוי]. Furthermore, while rumors of a great leader are usually exaggerated or fail to match their true character, the stories about Mordecai were entirely accurate. His greatness was completely genuine, stemming directly from his status as a righteous man devoted to God

From a broader philosophical perspective, this continuous rise symbolizes the natural path of the wise. While a person's physical strength slowly fades with old age, Mordecai represents intellect and wisdom, which only continue to grow and expand as time passes [מחיר יין].
