יחזקאל, פרק ל״ד, פסוק ט׳

Ezekiel 34:9Sefaria

לָכֵן֙ הָרֹעִ֔ים שִׁמְע֖וּ דְּבַר־יְהֹוָֽה׃

The leaders of the nation are confronted with a forceful summons to listen to the word of God. This demand is actually a repetition, echoing a call made just moments before. The renewed address serves multiple purposes. One perspective suggests a practical reason: because the preceding message was long and detailed, the repetition refocuses the leaders' attention, bridging the thoughts and maintaining the flow of the message [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective views this repetition as a deliberate tool to amplify the urgency and severity of the situation [רד״ק].

By issuing this renewed summons, God places the leaders face-to-face with their inescapable accountability. The directness of the address makes it clear that they cannot hide behind excuses or claim they have abandoned their posts. They alone carry the full weight of responsibility for the nation's current state, and therefore, they must stand and listen to the judgment God has decreed against them [מלבי״ם].

Yet, within this strict demand to listen, there lies an underlying message of hope. The summons is not merely a declaration of impending punishment. Rather, it serves as an urgent invitation for these corrupt leaders to repent. They are being given a chance to return to the path of the Torah and willingly accept God's guidance, carrying the promise that if they choose to change their ways, God will show them mercy [רד״ק].
