יחזקאל, פרק ל״ט, פסוק כ״ז

Ezekiel 39:27Sefaria

The gathering of the Israelites and their return to their homeland is much more than a mere historical or national milestone. It is a profound, deliberate process designed to reveal God's holiness to the entire world. The moment of return marks the exact time when God restores His people to their rightful place [רד ק ומצודת ציון]. This careful ingathering unfolds in two distinct stages. First, the people are separated from the foreign nations they lived among, and then they are collected from the various lands where they were scattered. Because the exile dispersed them so widely, bringing them back requires a highly precise and deliberate gathering [מלבי״ם]. Upon their return, the Israelites will finally regain their independence and strength [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

There are different perspectives regarding the specific timing and nature of this redemption. One approach views it as a past historical event, referring to the return of the Israelites from the Babylonian exile and their liberation from the Chaldeans [מצודת דוד]. However, another perspective understands this as a vision of the ultimate, future redemption. Unlike the era of the Second Temple, when only a small fraction of the people returned to the land while the majority stayed behind, this final ingathering will be absolute. In this future era, not a single person will be left behind in exile [אברבנאל].

The ultimate purpose behind this entire process is the public sanctification of God's name. This profound recognition will happen in several ways. The very act of salvation will prove to the global community that God has the absolute power to save His people, thereby ending any past dishonor to His name [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, God will be sanctified through the open, visible miracles He performs on behalf of the Israelites, as well as through the good deeds of the people themselves [מלבי״ם]. This sanctification will also stem from the nature of the redemption itself. It will not occur simply because of the goodwill or permission of other nations. Instead, it will involve conflict and divine vengeance against enemies, permanently wiping away the shame the Israelites endured in exile [אברבנאל]. Ultimately, as the nations witness the Israelites returning to their land and reclaiming their former greatness, many peoples will be brought to recognize and revere the true holiness of God [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
