Genesis 9:20Sefaria

Stepping out of the ark into a desolate world, Noah transitions from mere survival to becoming a partner in rebuilding nature and humanity. However, his first agricultural endeavor marks a dramatic turning point, initiating a moral descent. The narrative serves as a profound warning against the dangers of intoxication and lays the groundwork for understanding the subsequent fractures within humanity and the moral failings of Canaan and his descendants

The initiation of this planting is understood in two ways. Some interpret it simply as the commencement of his agricultural work However, the primary approach among commentators suggests a deeper, tragic flaw rooted in the concept of profanity. Noah degraded himself. Instead of prioritizing essential crops required to sustain a fragile, recovering world, he chose to plant a crop laden with the potential for frivolity and corruption This seemingly small misstep paved the way for his ultimate downfall [ספורנו].

Furthermore, Noah introduced a true agricultural innovation. While earlier generations grew individual vines merely to eat their grapes, Noah was the first to plant organized rows specifically designed for wine production He may have done this to advance civilization, or perhaps to numb his mind and escape the profound trauma of the global destruction he had witnessed To achieve this, Noah utilized vine branches and fig shoots he had carefully brought into the ark beforehand, knowing these specific plants would rot in the floodwaters and could not be easily cultivated from ordinary seeds An alternative tradition suggests he procured the plant directly from the Garden of Eden

The narrative tightly links the planting of the vineyard to the drinking of its wine, indicating a startling immediacy. Noah managed to plant and drink on the very same day. This rapid progression either reflects a more perfect state of nature where fruits blossomed instantly [הכתב והקבלה], or it serves as a symbolic reflection of his intense, internal craving for the wine [אבן עזרא].

Noah's identity in this new world is framed around his connection to the earth, a description that draws varying perspectives. Some view this as a title of immense authority, signifying him as the lord and master of a world now entirely under his domain Others see it as a testament to his dedication and expertise, highlighting his commitment to cultivating the barren soil just as a man of God is devoted to divine service Conversely, a more critical perspective argues that this connection to the earth represents a spiritual decline. By being drawn to the material world and abandoning intellectual holiness, Noah echoed the tragic mistake of the First Man, who was formed from the earth and sinned by eating from the Tree of Knowledge, a tree some traditions identify as a grapevine

Ultimately, the story stands as a severe warning against the loss of reason, madness, and the physical and spiritual destruction brought on by drunkenness This concept is vividly illustrated by a tradition detailing a dark partnership forged during the planting of the vineyard. As Noah worked, Satan joined him and slaughtered a sheep, a lion, and a pig over the vine, symbolizing the progressive stages of intoxication. At first, a person drinking is innocent and calm like a sheep. As the alcohol takes hold, he feels invincible and boastful like a lion. Finally, when completely drunk, he becomes degraded, soiled, and stripped of his human dignity, much like a pig
