אֲשֶׁ֣ר ׀ אָמַ֣ר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם זֹ֤את הַמְּנוּחָה֙ הָנִ֣יחוּ לֶעָיֵ֔ף וְזֹ֖את הַמַּרְגֵּעָ֑ה וְלֹ֥א אָב֖וּא שְׁמֽוֹעַ׃

God's prophets do not demand harsh physical suffering or impossible sacrifices. Instead, they offer a clear and straightforward path to achieving true peace and freedom. This divine message is designed entirely for the public benefit, meant to protect the nation from further hardship. Yet, tragically, the people choose to close their hearts and reject the guidance.

The prophetic call presents a vision of deep rest and relaxation. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to the instructions for building a fair and stable society where the people can live in harmony. This vision promises a dual benefit: physical security for the body alongside spiritual calm for the soul [מלבי״ם]. Following the Torah is what ultimately grants a person true freedom and peace [אהבת יהונתן]. Alternatively, this promise can be understood on a national and geographical level, pointing directly to Jerusalem and the Land of Israel. If the people obey God, they are assured a peaceful existence in their homeland, free from the threat of exile [רד״ק, אבן עזרא]. From a historical perspective, following the exile of the Ten Tribes, the Kingdom of Judah remained as a small surviving sanctuary of rest that needed to be carefully protected so it would not share the same destructive fate [אברבנאל].

To earn this profound peace, society is instructed to provide relief for the exhausted. Most commentators view this as a moral and social command: the people must not oppress or steal from the weak, the tired, and the poor, but must instead allow them to live with basic human dignity [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Others see the exhausted subject as the entire nation itself, which was utterly drained by the endless troubles during the days of Ahaz and the terrifying wars of Sennacherib. In this view, the command is to create a secure haven for the people so they will not be forced to flee and seek refuge in Egypt or Assyria [שד״ל, אבן עזרא, אברבנאל]. Another line of thought directs this demand at the corrupt priests and false prophets. They are ordered to leave the drained nation alone, stop deceiving the public with lies, and finally begin teaching them the true word of God [רד״ק].

Despite the fact that these messages are delivered purely for their own well-being, the people refuse to listen. They simply have no desire to accept the prophetic warnings [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Beyond a mere stubborn refusal, the tragedy runs deeper. The nation has become so entirely disconnected from divine truth that the prophet's teachings sound to them like completely incomprehensible words, spoken in a foreign and mocking language [שד״ל, אברבנאל].
