ישעיהו, פרק כ״ח, פסוק כ״ג

Isaiah 28:23Sefaria

הַאֲזִ֥ינוּ וְשִׁמְע֖וּ קוֹלִ֑י הַקְשִׁ֥יבוּ וְשִׁמְע֖וּ אִמְרָתִֽי׃

A prophet urgently calls out to the people, preparing them for a profound lesson about divine providence. The core message reveals that the shifting events of the world, including the hardships experienced by both individuals and the broader public, are never random. Instead, they are entirely necessary. Guided by God's ultimate wisdom, these challenges are carefully designed to lead humanity and the world toward perfection. This process is deeply similar to a farmer who constantly changes his methods depending on the specific type of seed and the changing seasons [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל, שטיינזלץ].

The prophet's plea for the people's attention is repeated in two distinct ways. The primary approach among commentators is that this repetition simply serves to strengthen the message and emphasize its supreme importance, with both parts carrying the exact same meaning [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא]. Conversely, other scholars suggest that this dual structure hints at two different themes within the lesson itself. The first part of the call addresses God's general management of the world. This includes sweeping hardships that affect an entire nation, much like the broad and general stage of a farmer's harvest. The second part of the plea shifts to a much more private dimension. It focuses on the specific struggles perfectly tailored to the individual person, mirroring the precise and calculated stage of planting seeds [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].

This distinction is further reflected in the nature of the communication itself. The first type of call is compared to a simple, general sound, while the second represents structured, articulated speech, making it far more detailed and focused. Additionally, there is a logical, step-by-step progression in how a person absorbs this divine wisdom. Initially, a person merely catches the raw sound with their ear as a basic physical reaction. Only after this initial contact do they actively direct their focus to truly understand, internalize, and accept the deeper meaning of the message [מלבי״ם].
