איוב, פרק ל״ו, פסוק י״ז

Job 36:17Sefaria

וְדִין־רָשָׁ֥ע מָלֵ֑אתָ דִּ֖ין וּמִשְׁפָּ֣ט יִתְמֹֽכוּ׃

Severe human suffering naturally raises profound questions about the nature of divine justice. When a person endures intense hardship, it is easy to wonder about the purpose of such pain and how it ultimately shapes human destiny. The primary approach among commentators is that an individual might find himself overwhelmed with harsh afflictions that seem fitting only for the truly wicked. However, this pain is not a punishment meant for destruction. Rather, the judgment and the suffering itself act as a support system. By enduring these trials, the individual is spared from future condemnation in hell and earns a place in the World to Come. For this reason, these hardships should be accepted with love.

Offering a slightly different perspective, [רמב״ן] suggests that the individual actually deserved to face the full weight of the punishment reserved for the wicked because of his past sins. Strict justice was supposed to take hold of him completely. Yet, God chose to forgive him, using the suffering merely as a tool to guide him back to the proper path.

Taking the narrative in a completely different direction, [מלבי״ם] shifts the scene to the heavenly court. In this view, the wicked entity is Satan, acting as the accuser against the individual. God delves deeply into the judicial process in response to these accusations. The process is understood in two parts: the arguments presented and the final verdict. The rigorous laws of heavenly justice, which require every side to be thoroughly examined, are what temporarily support the claims of the heavenly accuser.

Another approach moves away from present suffering and looks back at a time when the individual was wealthy and powerful. According to [אלשיך], the person used his influence fearlessly to punish wrongdoers and bring them to full justice. Because of his firm and uncompromising actions, societal justice stood strong, supported by the fear that people had of his authority.

Through all these varying perspectives, a singular profound insight emerges. Whether enacted in the heavenly courts, experienced as personal spiritual refinement, or enforced in earthly society, justice and judgment are the essential foundations that support and sustain all of reality [אבן עזרא].
