Job 36:19Sefaria

When facing life's greatest crises, human beings naturally look to their available resources for salvation, questioning whether their material assets or their spiritual pleas hold the key to survival. One primary perspective views this struggle through the lens of material wealth and physical power The underlying question is whether a person's riches, high status, or sheer physical strength will be of any use when disaster strikes. Ultimately, material wealth and physical might are entirely powerless to save a person during times of deep distress Within this line of thought, another view suggests that a person known for generosity and high standing loses their influence entirely if they do not possess actual, tangible wealth

In contrast, another major approach shifts the focus from material wealth to the spiritual realm of prayer and crying out to God This perspective explores the sincerity of human prayer and the true purpose of suffering. It raises a profound psychological question: would a person ever pray with complete sincerity if they were not experiencing hardship? It is often distress itself that wakes a person up, pushing them to pray and exert all their spiritual energy [שטיינזלץ].

Commentators point out that suffering plays a vital role in human growth and correction. If a person expects a life completely free of trouble and struggle, the abundance of good might lead them to rebel and sin. Hardships are therefore introduced to prevent this spiritual decline and to atone for past wrongs Consequently, a prayer born out of deep difficulty carries far more weight than one offered during times of peace. All the prayers and efforts a person might have made before disaster struck cannot compare to a genuine cry emerging from pain, a plea that God is expected to answer immediately [אלשיך]. Furthermore, it is difficult for a person to point to their good behavior during peaceful times as proof of their righteousness. It is simply much easier to remain honest and good when one is supported by wealth, health, and a comfortable life [מלבי״ם].
