נחמיה, פרק י״ג, פסוק כ״ז

Nehemiah 13:27Sefaria

A harsh rebuke is directed at the people for marrying foreign women, emphasizing the extreme danger and severity of this betrayal. The criticism is rooted deeply in the lessons of history, expressing profound shock at the very thought of repeating the sins of previous generations. It raises a piercing question of disbelief, asking if it is truly possible that the people would willingly return to the same failures and commit such a great evil [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Commentators explore how this rebuke connects to the tragedies of the past. One approach builds on the precedent of King Solomon. If a leader of Solomon's immense spiritual standing was led to sin by his foreign wives, ordinary people will undoubtedly be negatively influenced. These marriages will inevitably turn their hearts away and cause them to sin against God [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective focuses on the clear warnings set forth in the Torah. It is baffling that the nation would allow itself to ignore the curses promised to those who violate God's word. The people should have learned discipline and developed a true reverence for God simply by observing the tragedies that struck their ancestors for committing these exact same offenses [רלב״ג].

Ultimately, engaging in these marriages is defined not merely as a poor choice, but as a direct betrayal, constituting a severe sin and transgression against God [מצודת ציון].
