Nehemiah 13:28Sefaria

True leadership often demands unyielding confrontation with those in power. Nehemiah faces a severe crisis involving a high-ranking member of the High Priest's family who had married the daughter of Sanballat. Samaritan leaders frequently sought marriages with the noble families of Judah [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, since Sanballat was a well-known enemy of the Jewish people, this political and familial alliance was recognized as a profound threat.

In response, Nehemiah takes decisive action and banishes the man from Jerusalem. This expulsion was initially prompted by the man's refusal to divorce his foreign wife [מצודת דוד], which was a direct violation of the prohibition against marrying into the surrounding nations [רלב״ג]. Beyond the religious violation, the primary approach among commentators is that this banishment was driven by clear security concerns. The marriage allowed Sanballat to visit Jerusalem regularly to see his family. Nehemiah feared these visits were a cover for espionage, giving the enemy a chance to study the city's layout, access routes, and vulnerabilities in order to harm its residents. By expelling the son-in-law, Nehemiah effectively cut off Sanballat's access to the city.

The method of Nehemiah's response was also shaped by the specific circumstances of the confrontation. He resorted to banishment because the offender was a violent and powerful individual, making physical punishment or forced compliance impossible [מלבי״ם]. The consequences of this exile were severe and long-lasting. The banished priest lost his noble lineage, was completely disqualified from serving in the Temple, and his descendants were permanently considered outsiders [מלבי״ם]. Historically, it is highly likely that these exiled descendants of the High Priest went on to establish the Samaritan priestly dynasty [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
