Psalms 104:15Sefaria

The richly watered earth produces three fundamental staples for human life. These provisions go beyond mere physical survival, offering humanity an added measure of refinement, pleasure, and joy

The first of these gifts is wine, unique because it offers a dual benefit: it nourishes the body while simultaneously bringing gladness to the human spirit [תורה תמימה]. However, this beverage possesses a complex, dual nature. When consumed in proper measure, wine sharpens the intellect, clears the mind, and brings true joy. Yet, if a person lacks caution and drinks to excess, that same wine leads to ruin and desolation

Following wine is oil, provided to brighten, repair, and bring joy to the human face Commentators offer different perspectives on how oil achieves this brightening effect. It can be applied directly to the skin as a soothing ointment that makes the face gleam, consumed as a rich and satisfying food, or used as fuel for lamps that illuminate the darkness of the night

The final and most essential element is bread. Serving as the primary source of human sustenance, bread acts as a vital support system, strengthening the body from weakness While wine and oil were created to provide pleasure and light, they cannot stand on their own. The joy and brightness they offer are only truly effective when paired with bread. Without this essential foundation, wine becomes bitter to the one drinking it, and oil loses its value [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

On a deeper level, these three staples serve as a profound metaphor for the spiritual life of a scholar engaged in studying the Torah. Wine represents the joy experienced when discovering fresh insights and new understandings. Oil symbolizes the illuminating power of wisdom that brightens the learner's face. Finally, bread represents clear, truthful, and practical religious rulings, which provide ultimate stability and reliable support for the human heart [חומת אנך].
