Psalms 104:16Sefaria

The natural world operates through a wondrous system sustained by life-giving rain. This water does not merely fall on cultivated fields; it reaches deep into wild forests, nourishing the earth even in remote places completely untouched by human presence [אלשיך].

In these distant lands stand massive trees that belong entirely to God. The primary approach among commentators is that these are wild forest trees growing completely on their own. Unlike agricultural crops that require human hands to plant and tend them, these forests depend exclusively on God's will and the natural forces He embedded within the soil. Another perspective views this divine association as a descriptive tool to emphasize the sheer, towering height and immense size of these trees Alternatively, this idea is also understood as a subtle reference to the original trees that grew in the Garden of Eden [רש״י].

There are different views regarding the exact nature of these wild trees. Some suggest they are fruit-bearing [אבן עזרא], noting that uncultivated forests naturally produce wild fruits, such as apples and acorns, without any human intervention [רד״ק]. Others argue that these are specifically barren trees. Because people typically do not invest time or effort into planting trees that yield no crop, these wild trees rely entirely on the rainfall provided by God for their survival

The cedars of Lebanon are specifically highlighted in this context because they are recognized as the tallest and most magnificent of all forest trees God is credited with planting them, meaning He infused the earth with the inherent power to bring them forth and make them grow. Ultimately, these towering trees serve a vital purpose in the natural order, designed to provide essential shelter and nesting grounds for the animals and birds that God created to inhabit them [מלבי״ם].
