Psalms 104:17Sefaria

אֲשֶׁר־שָׁ֭ם צִפֳּרִ֣ים יְקַנֵּ֑נוּ חֲ֝סִידָ֗ה בְּרוֹשִׁ֥ים בֵּיתָֽהּ׃

The natural world is structured with precise intention and hierarchy, ensuring that every living creature finds a habitat perfectly suited to its needs. Elements of nature that might initially appear to lack direct human utility actually fulfill a vital role in the broader web of life by providing essential shelter for animals. High above the ground, all species of birds establish their homes and build their nests in towering cedars [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. The stork, being an exceptionally large bird, naturally seeks out these great heights to build its nest, making its home in tall, non-fruit-bearing fir trees [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators is that this natural arrangement answers a fundamental question: why does God nurture and water tall, barren trees that do not yield food for human consumption? The answer lies in the way God designed His world, where lower forms of creation serve higher ones. The inanimate earth sustains plant life, plants sustain animals, and together they serve humanity. Therefore, these trees have a clear, deliberate purpose in providing resting and nesting spaces for birds. It is as though the great cedars and firs were brought into existence specifically for the benefit of these creatures [אלשיך, רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

This design highlights the profound value these trees offer while they are still rooted in the earth and actively growing. Their purpose is fulfilled in their living state, which goes far beyond the practical benefits they provide only after being cut down—such as using their thin branches to start fires or their thick trunks to construct houses and ships [רד״ק, מאירי].

While the focus remains largely on the physical wonders of the natural world, an allegorical approach suggests a deeper meaning. In this view, the image of birds safely building their nests serves as a symbol for the people of Israel, pointing to a future time when they will dwell securely and peacefully in their own place [רש״י].
