תהלים, פרק ק״ד, פסוק כ״ג

Psalms 104:23Sefaria

יֵצֵ֣א אָדָ֣ם לְפׇעֳל֑וֹ וְֽלַעֲבֹ֖דָת֣וֹ עֲדֵי־עָֽרֶב׃

As the sun rises, a natural shift change occurs across the world. The dark hours, meant for human sleep, rest, and the renewal of strength [אבן עזרא, מאירי], give way to the active hours of humanity. In the morning light, people step out safely into the fields to begin their day. This happens at the exact moment that wild predators retreat from the open spaces and return to their places [מצודת דוד, מאירי].

Throughout the day, human effort takes different forms. People engage both in general business and daily activities, as well as in heavy, physical labor, such as working the earth with their own hands [מלבי״ם]. They remain occupied with these tasks in the fields until the evening. Only as the day ends do they gather back into the safety of the city. Once the fields are empty, the wild animals emerge once again to roam and hunt for their food [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This demanding human schedule prompts an existential reflection regarding humanity's place in the natural world. One might wonder why people are forced to toil so intensely until nightfall simply to earn their food, and whether this constant struggle makes the human condition inferior to that of the wild animals, who do not labor in the same way [אלשיך]. However, the primary approach among commentators is that this cycle of day and night reveals a profound harmony. The clear separation between the time of humans and the time of animals demonstrates that all creations operate within an intentional, carefully designed order. This balance ultimately reflects the deep wisdom of God [רד״ק].
