וְנ֤וֹעַ יָנ֣וּעוּ בָנָ֣יו וְשִׁאֵ֑לוּ וְ֝דָרְשׁ֗וּ מֵחׇרְבֽוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃

The consequences of wickedness often outlive the wrongdoer, casting a dark shadow over the next generation. A severe curse falls upon the orphaned children of a corrupt man, dooming them to a life of wandering, shame, and extreme poverty. Stripped of all family assets, they are reduced to a harsh reality of relentless begging.

The primary approach among commentators is that these children are forced to travel from place to place just to ask for a piece of bread, engaging in an intense and nonstop search for handouts [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מאירי, רש״י]. At first, the orphans are deeply ashamed of their new reality. To hide their disgrace, they wander to foreign cities where no one knows them to gather charity. However, as time passes and desperation sets in, they shed their veil of shame and begin begging even within their own hometown [מלבי״ם]. Historically, some connect this specific curse to the fate of the surviving ten sons of the wicked Haman, who were ultimately forced to beg from door to door [אלשיך].

The absolute loss of their former life is complete, as their family homes and lands are entirely destroyed, leaving them with nothing [ביאור שטיינזלץ, אלשיך]. Left without shelter, they are forced to live within the rubble itself [אבן עזרא], crying out for charity from passersby directly from the ruins of their once-grand homes [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Conversely, another perspective suggests that out of sheer hunger and despair, the orphans will travel to seek handouts even at the ruined homes of others. They know they will not receive a proper gift in such desolate places, but their deprivation is so great that they will not turn down even the smallest offering [המאירי].

Beyond the physical destitution of the children, an additional layer of meaning shifts the focus from the orphans begging for bread to the public asking questions about their downfall [רש״י, מנחת שי]. As news of their collapse spreads, passersby will see their tragic state and wonder aloud about what happened to them [רש״י]. When people express surprise over where all the family's wealth disappeared to, the response will be a simple directive: look at their ruins, and you will understand [רד״ק]. The community will naturally investigate how the lives of these children were so drastically overturned, ultimately realizing that this total destruction arrived as a direct punishment for their corrupt and wicked actions [המאירי].
