תהלים, פרק ק״ט, פסוק ט׳

Psalms 109:9Sefaria

יִֽהְיוּ־בָנָ֥יו יְתוֹמִ֑ים וְ֝אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ אַלְמָנָֽה׃

A severe curse directed at a wicked individual often centers on the total collapse of his family unit, bringing ruin to those closest to him. The primary approach among commentators is that the desire for his children to become orphans and his wife a widow is a direct call for his premature death. He will die young, leaving his children fatherless while they are still small, and forcing his wife into widowhood during her youth [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מאירי].

Beyond the tragedy of an early death, the curse extends to the bleak, ongoing future of his surviving family. They will face a permanent reality of isolation. No one will step forward to take pity on the children or bring them into a home to serve as a father figure, just as no one will offer the widow a new home. Consequently, they will be trapped in a perpetual state of vulnerability, entirely stripped of social support, protection, or a safety net [מלבי״ם].

A distinctly different perspective suggests that the harshness of the curse lies not just in the death itself, but in the specific circumstances surrounding it and the resulting legal and financial fallout. According to this view, the man will be killed in a location with no witnesses present. Because his death cannot be legally proven, his family will be left in a state of agonizing limbo. The children will be orphans in reality, yet legally barred from inheriting their father's estate. Similarly, the wife will remain chained to her marriage, unable to claim her financial rights or ever move forward with her life [אלשיך].
