דניאל, פרק ה׳, פסוק כ״ז

The moment of Divine judgment arrives with a clear and final declaration. God evaluates human actions as if placing them upon a scale. When the king is evaluated before God, his life is carefully measured, and he is found completely empty and lacking in any righteousness [רש״י].

This evaluation places the king's merits on one side of the balance and his wickedness on the other. Ultimately, not a single merit can be found to tip the scales in his favor. Because he lacks any redeeming qualities to balance his debts, the decision is made not to extend his time [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. The central reason that seals his guilt and causes the scales of judgment to fall completely against him is his severe act of disrespect toward the sacred vessels of the Temple [מלבי״ם].
